RRB ECG Technician Vacancy 2026: RRB-wise Distribution
Out of the 590 total paramedical posts in CEN 05/2026, only 04 posts are for ECG Technician — one each in 4 RRBs. All other RRBs have zero ECG Technician vacancy this time. Since you can apply to only one RRB, your choice here is critical.
| RRB | Railway / PU | UR | SC | ST | OBC | EWS | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ahmedabad | Western Railway (WR) | 1 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 1 |
| Chennai | Southern Railway (SR) | 0 | 1 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 1 |

| Grand Total | 3 | 1 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 4 | |
Read this before you choose your RRB: There are only 4 ECG Technician posts in the whole country, and there are no OBC, ST or EWS vacancies in this category. The single SC post is at RRB Chennai; the three UR posts are at Ahmedabad, Guwahati and Jammu-Srinagar. OBC, ST and EWS candidates can still apply against UR vacancies, but only subject to fulfilling all UR eligibility conditions and without any age relaxation. Since the chosen RRB can never be changed, decide carefully.

RRB ECG Technician Eligibility Criteria 2026
Educational Qualification
As per Annexure A (Post Parameters) of CEN 05/2026, a candidate must possess the qualification below on or before 14 October 2026. Candidates awaiting their final result are not eligible to apply.
- 10+2 or Graduation in Science, having a Certificate / Diploma / Degree in ECG Laboratory Technology, Cardiology, Cardiology Technician or Cardiology Techniques from a reputed institution.
- Note: The certificate should be of a minimum of one year duration and above.
Distance learning note (official): Open and Distance Learning mode of education is accepted only from Universities established by an Act of Parliament or State Legislature, Institutions Deemed to be Universities under Section 3 of the UGC Act 1956, and Institutions of National Importance declared under an Act of Parliament — these stand automatically recognised for employment under the Central Government, provided they have been approved by the University Grants Commission.
Age Limit (as on 01.01.2027)
The age limit for ECG Technician is 18 to 33 years. The candidate must not be born after 01.01.2009 (lower limit). Upper age limits and the corresponding earliest date of birth are given below.
| Category | Date of Birth Not Earlier Than | Maximum Age |
|---|---|---|
| UR / EWS | 02.01.1994 | 33 years |
| OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) | 02.01.1991 | 36 years (33 + 3) |
| SC / ST | 02.01.1989 | 38 years (33 + 5) |
| PwBD – UR / EWS | — | 43 years (33 + 10) |
| PwBD – OBC (NCL) | — | 46 years (33 + 13) |
| PwBD – SC / ST | — | 48 years (33 + 15) |
Ex-Servicemen get 3 / 6 / 8 years relaxation (UR-EWS / OBC-NCL / SC-ST) after deduction of length of service. Widowed, divorced or judicially separated women who have not remarried can apply up to 35 / 38 / 40 years of age. Relaxations are not cumulative — only the maximum single relaxation applies, and SC, ST and OBC-NCL candidates applying against UR vacancies get no age relaxation.
Medical Standard — C-1
ECG Technician carries medical standard C-1, which is more relaxed than the B-1 standard applicable to Radiographer and Lab Assistant posts. Candidates must be physically fit in all respects and meet:
- Distance Vision: 6/12, 6/18 with or without glasses
- Near Vision: Sn. 0.6, 0.6 with or without glasses when reading or close work is required
Unlike B-1, the C-1 standard does not require passing the colour vision, binocular vision, night vision and mesopic vision tests. Candidates found medically unsuitable for the opted post will not be given any alternative appointment.
Suitability for PwBD Candidates
For ECG Technician, the post parameters identify suitability only for AAV (One arm and one leg affected) under Locomotor Disability. The post is not identified as suitable for Visual Impairment (VI), Hearing Impairment (HI), OD or Multiple Disabilities (MD), and there are no PwBD-reserved ECG Technician vacancies in this CEN.
RRB ECG Technician Application Fee 2026
| Category | Fee | Refund on appearing in CBT |
|---|---|---|
| All candidates (General / OBC / EWS) | ₹500 | ₹400 refunded |
| SC, ST, Ex-Servicemen, PwBD, Female, Transgender, Minorities, EBC | ₹250 | ₹250 refunded |
Fee payment is online only (net banking, debit/credit card or UPI). The refund is credited to your Aadhaar-seeded bank account, so link your bank account with Aadhaar before applying. No refund is given if the application is incomplete, rejected, or if you do not appear in the CBT.
RRB ECG Technician Exam Pattern 2026
There is a single stage Computer Based Test (CBT) — no Tier 2, no skill test and no interview.
| Subject | No. of Questions | Marks |
|---|---|---|
| Professional Ability (ECG / Cardiology Technology) | 70 | 70 |
| General Awareness | 10 | 10 |
| General Arithmetic, General Intelligence & Reasoning | 10 | 10 |
| General Science | 10 | 10 |
| Total | 100 | 100 |
- Duration: 90 minutes (120 minutes for PwBD candidates eligible for a scribe)
- Question type: Objective MCQ with four options, only one correct
- Negative marking: 1/3 mark deducted for every wrong answer
- Normalisation of marks is done if the CBT is held in multiple shifts
- Candidates equal to the number of vacancies (1:1) are called for Document Verification, RRB-wise, on merit
- The section-wise split is indicative — the actual paper may vary slightly
Minimum Qualifying Marks
| Community | Qualifying % | Marks Out of 100 |
|---|---|---|
| UR / EWS | 40% | 40 marks |
| OBC (NCL) / SC | 30% | 30 marks |
| ST | 25% | 25 marks |
Scoring strategy: With only 4 posts nationwide, the qualifying marks are meaningless — the real cut off will sit near the top of the merit list. 70 of the 100 marks come from ECG and Cardiology alone, so your target should be 62+ in the professional section and 22+ out of the 30 general marks. ECG interpretation, lead placement and arrhythmia recognition are the highest-return topics; because of 1/3 negative marking, skip what you cannot reason out.

How to Prepare for RRB ECG Technician CBT 2026
- Make ECG interpretation your core strength. Normal values of P wave, PR interval, QRS duration, QT interval and ST segment, plus rate and axis calculation, are the most frequently asked topics.
- Master lead placement cold. V1 to V6 positions, limb lead colour codes, Einthoven’s triangle, augmented leads and the common misplacement errors — these are guaranteed marks.
- Learn MI localisation by leads. Anterior (V1–V4), inferior (II, III, aVF), lateral (I, aVL, V5–V6), septal and posterior changes with reciprocal changes — a favourite question type.
- Recognise arrhythmias on sight. Sinus bradycardia and tachycardia, atrial fibrillation and flutter, SVT, VT, VF, asystole, and first, second (Mobitz I and II) and third degree blocks.
- Connect biochemistry with the ECG. Hyperkalaemia (tall tented T waves), hypokalaemia (U waves), hypercalcaemia and hypocalcaemia (QT changes), and digitalis effect.
- Cover cardiac markers and drugs. Troponin, CK-MB and BNP timing and significance; beta blockers, antiarrhythmics and emergency cardiac drugs.
- Do not leave the 30 general marks. General Science is only up to Class 10 CBSE level — with 4 posts nationwide, every single mark decides the merit.
- Practise in the exact CBT format. Full-length 100-question, 90-minute mocks with 1/3 negative marking, twice a week, with review of every wrong answer.
A realistic word of advice: 4 posts across the whole of India means extremely high competition. If you are eligible for more than one paramedical category in this CEN — for example you also hold a DMLT or a Radiography diploma — compare the vacancy numbers first, because you can apply for only one RRB and the post preferences you give inside that RRB matter a great deal. That said, a Railway ECG Technician job is a permanent Level 4 Central Government post, so if you are eligible, it is worth a serious, focused attempt.
